The unemployment rate in Mason County was up in May. According to the State Employment Security Department, the unemployment rate in the county last month was 10.9%. That’s up a half percent from April’s revised rate of 10.4% but just slightly under May 2011’s 11.2%.
The 2012 Mark E. Reed Scholarship award winners have been announced. According to Kevin Lyle, Chairman of the Washington Board and division controller for Green Diamond Resource Company, which sponsors the scholarship program, the eight winners each received $3,000 awards after touring Green Diamond Resource Company timberlands and a dinner at the historic Colonial House on June 14th.
A Seabeck man has pleaded guilty to robbing banks in Allyn and Kingston as well as coffee stands in Bremerton and Silverdale in 2009 and 2010. According to the U.S. attorney’s office, 48-year-old Michael D. Wandke faces 15 years in federal prison for robbing the Kitsap Bank in Allyn three times, the Kingston Bank of America once and four coffee stands.
Jay’s Farm Stand on Olympic Highway North in Shelton will stay open, at least for another 45 days. The City’s Building Department was threatening to close down the fruit and vegetable stand this week because of two tents – what the City calls “Membrane Structures” – the owner uses to protect his products from the weather. The City’s Building Inspector placed a stop work order on Jay’s saying the tents don’t meet the City’s code and the owner needs to have permanent structures in place.
A sex offender from Alaska has registered as a transient in Shelton. According to a sex offender information bulletin from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Adam Lee Inman has just been released from jail after being arrested for Failing to Register as a Sex Offender and pleading guilty to the charge. He was released Monday pending sentencing which is scheduled for July 2.
Gas prices in Washington continue to drop but still remain near the highest in the Nation. GasBuddy.com reports the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in the State is $3.94.
