County Discusses Increasing Revenues

Tuesday, the Mason County Commission continued discussing their options for increasing revenues to the County. This includes possibly increasing property taxes through a Road Levy Shift, a Levy Lid Lift, or a Criminal Justice Levy; increasing sales tax with a Public Safety tax; increase fees and service charges; implement False Alarm and Nuisance policies; re-evaluating healthcare benefits for part time employees; and reducing staff and/or services.

The Commissioners voiced support for looking into a levy shift, lid lift, Public Safety Sales Tax, increasing fees and service charges, re-evaluate health benefits, and implementing false alarm and nuisance policies. The Commission also asked staff to annalyze the past five years to find out where the County’s revenues have gone. Another briefing will be scheduled in the next couple of weeks

Another Briefing Held on the Belfair Sewer Finance Plan

The Mason County Commission held another briefing on the Belfair Sewer Finance Plan. Staff from the State Department of Ecology attended the briefing. During the meeting, the Commissioners asked Ecology several questions relating to possible refinancing the system’s debt and whether septic systems could still be allowed in an Urban Growth Area.

Ecology said refinancing is a possibility but through the USDA and the Department of Commerce would likely have the answer for the septic system question.

The suggestion to meet with those entities and other funding agency was also made.
