A small earthquake shook an area between Belfair and Gorst Sunday afternoon. The USGS reports the magnitude 1.6 quake hit about 4:11 PM and was centered west of the Bremerton Airport at a depth of 11.1 miles.
Two bears were trapped near Belfair this week but residents say two others are still on the loose in the area. Pat Loudin, who lives on Newkirk Road near Riverhill, told MasonWebTV.com that the State Department of Fish and Wildlife dropped off a bear trap Thursday afternoon which caught one bear Friday morning. However a second bear was seen looking around the first trapped bear.
Friday was the last day of candidate filing for this fall’s election and two more jumped into the races for Mason County Commissioners bringing the total number of candidates for the three seats to 13. Frank Benavente filed for Mason County Commissioner District 2 as an Independent bringing the number of candidates for that race to 5. And Doug Ellingson filed as an Independent for Mason County Commissioner District 1, bringing the number of candidates for that race to 4.
The Washington State Patrol will be holding additional cadet testing next month. A news release says the Patrol’s recent round of cadet testing caught many people unprepared to take the required cadet fitness and written tests. Officials say the biggest stumbling block continues to be the fitness test, specifically sit ups.
Four of the five people involved in a home invasion robbery west of Belfair last November have been sentenced. The robbery occurred November 11, 2011 in the 300 block of Olympic View Drive, which is about two miles west of Belfair. The suspects forced their way into the victims’ home, tied up them up, and stole money, jewelry, medications and cash.
