Navy Approves NJROTC Change; School District Looking into Funding

The Navy has approved the application for the Shelton NJROTC to be changed to the Navy National Defense Cadet Corps and now the Shelton School District is looking into funding the change. The Navy’s approval to NNDCC occurred Monday and was announced during Tuesday’s Shelton School Board meeting: 3-13-13NNDCCapproved

Others came forward Tuesday night to voice the importance of keeping the program, many with letters of support, and suggested that Shelton follow Port Angeles and Oak Harbor by making the NJROTC/NNDCC a CTE (Career and Technical Education) Program: 3-13-13NNDCCcte

Each School Board member voiced their support and importance of the program. Sue MacCausland: 3-13-13sueNNDCC

The Board voted 4-0 to start looking into how to fund the NNDCC starting next school year. There are several questions that remain such as the overall cost to the District, the pay scale of the instructors and their qualifications, and whether the Office of Public Instruction will allow the NNDCC to be a CTE program. The Shelton School Board will start its budget planning later this month.
