Tribe Suing School Districts Including MMK

The Quinault Indian Nation has filed a lawsuit against four school districts for racial discrimination. The suit stems from the dissolution of the Coastal League. Among the defendants is Mary M. Knight. The other schools named in the suit are Lake Quinault, North River and Wishkah Valley. The federal lawsuit contends that by dissolving the league for these Class 1B schools, Taholah, a largely Native American public school, was left without anyone to play against. Earlier this year, officials from the former Coastal League placed sanctions on Taholah for violations of eligibility, and concerns over safety and sportsmanship. The WIAA Southwest District IV overturned some of the sanctions and the WIAA overturned the rest. KING 5 News says the Tribe’s lawsuit focuses on the treatment of its students, calling harassment against them “severe, pervasive and objectively offensive.”
