Public Memorial for Ranger Tuesday; Flags to Half Staff

Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson

A public memorial service for a Mount Rainier National Park ranger fatally shot on New Year’s Day has been scheduled for Tuesday. Park spokesman Patti Wold says the memorial for Ranger Margaret Anderson will be at 1 PM January 10th at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. Wednesday, a special motorcade of emergency responders escorted Anderson’s body from the Pierce County medical examiner’s office to a mortuary. While the park remains closed until Saturday, people have been leaving expressions of condolence at a makeshift memorial at the park entrance. Anderson was shot while trying to stop a vehicle inside the park. The gunman was found dead Monday in the park.

Flags at Half Staff Tuesday

Governor Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, January 10th, in memory of National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson. Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Tuesday, or first thing Wednesday morning, Jan. 11th. Other government entities, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.
