Shelton Football Falls at Klahowya

The Shelton football team rallied from 16 points down and lead by one late before Klahowya responded and the Eagles beat the Highclimbers 22 to 17 Saturday.

Klahowya’s got on the board first with a safety. The Eagle’s Jake Manavie extended that lead to 9-0 with a pick-six late in the first half, returning the interception 17 yards for the score.

Shelton responded with a recovered fumble followed by a 32-yard pass from Mason Goos to Lukas Szalonek and a quick spike by the sophomore quarterback that to up a 26-yard field goal for Hunter Borgault and the teams headed to halftime with Klahowya up 9 to 3.

To open the third quarter, the Eagles went 51 yards in three plays to increase their to 16 to 3.

The Highclimbers’ offense started their rally in the fourth quarter. On a 4th & 10 from the 35, Goos hit Danny Mendiola-Lopez in stride for Shelton’s first touchdown of the game, making the score 16 to 10.

Shelton’s defense then stiffened and Zach Speaks intercepted a pass but a penalty put the ‘Climbers offense on their own 12 yardline. One play later, Mendiola-Lopez took a Goos’ pass 88 yards to tie the game and Borgault gave Shelton their first lead 17-16 with 4:41 remaining.

However, Klahowya responded, going 53 yards on two plays in less than 20 seconds but the Highclimbers stopped the Eagle’s two-point conversion attempt and Klahowya took the lead back at 22 to 17.

Shelton went three and out in their next possession but the ‘Climber defense made Klahowya go backwards and forced a punt giving Shelton a chance with under two minutes remaining. However, the Highclimbers were only able to get to the 47 before the Eagles ended the threat with an interception.

With the win, Klahowya improves to 2-and-1 on the season while Shelton drops to 1-and-3.

Shelton was led by freshman Conner Gilman who rushed for 109 yards in his first varsity start. Mason Goos completed 4 of 17 passes.

The Highclimbers return to Jack Stark Field Friday to take on North Mason in the Mason County Cup and the Battle for the Axe. Kick off is set for 7 PM on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
