K9 Leads Officers to Deer Creek Assault Suspect

Mason County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an individual Monday after a theft and assault at Deer Creek Store.

Chief Deputy Ryan Spurling told MasonWebTV Powered by HCC, the incident began with a theft in the store about 2 PM. The store owner confronted the suspect and the suspect hit the owner with a machete before fleeing the store on foot.

A multi-agency response followed and officers searched the area around the store, calling in K9 Jano to track the suspect about 5 PM. After a two-mile track, Jano located the suspect about 90 minutes later. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Mason County Jail.

The store owner suffered minor injuries.

The police presence in the area caused a distraction for drivers as some of the officers were seen carrying assault rifles which was confirmed by Chief Spurling. “Yeah, because you got a guy that has already assaulted some one with a machete out in the woods,” Spurling said in a phone interview. “We kind of take that serious.”
