The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjacent areas from August 30, 2020 to September 5, 2020.
US 101 – Coffee Creek – Remove Fish Barrier
Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 346.8
Description: Crews are building a new alignment for Coffee Creek as part of a WSDOT fish barrier removal project.

9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3
- Crews will close both the southbound US 101 exit to Shelton-Matlock Road and the Shelton-Matlock Road on-ramp to southbound US 101.
- A signed detour will be in place. The work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled.
- The around-the-clock closure will allow crews to finalize work on both new ramps including paving and installing permanent lighting, pavement markings and guardrail.
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1
- One-way alternating traffic on US 101 approaching Shelton Matlock Road.

Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap Location: Milepost(s) 31.1 – 31.7
Description: Crews will build a two lane bypass road while crews build a roundabout at the intersection of SR 3 and Airport Road. Before travelers are moved into the bypass road, WSDOT will temporarily reduce the speed limit from 50 mph to 30 mph between milepost 31.16 and 31.77. The roundabout is expected to open to travelers by October.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Monday through Friday.
Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap Location: Milepost(s) 31 to 31.5
Description: Southbound shoulder closures with occasional traffic stops for utility installation.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 2-4.
SR 302 – E of Elgin Clifton Rd to SR 16 – Remove Fish Barriers, Paving and ADA Compliance
Highway: 302 Region: Olympic County: Pierce Location: Milepost(s) 10.8 to 16.9
Description: This project removes and replaces three outdated culverts under SR 302 with fish passable structures, repaves 6 miles of SR 302, and rebuilds sidewalks and ramps at the intersections of SR 302 and SR 302 (Spur) through SR 302 and 94th Avenue to comply with the Americans with Disability Act and improve access for all travelers. Additionally, drivers can expect three consecutive weekend closures of the SR 302 Purdy Spit for bridge deck repairs beginning Sept. 11. A signed detour will be available to travelers around Henderson Bay. This work is extremely weather sensitive and could be rescheduled.
Work Schedule: Drivers will see weekday, daytime construction as crews build the concrete girder bridge at Minter Creek.
SR 302 Purdy Bridge closure dates for deck repairs:
- 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14.
- 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21.
- 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25 through 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28.
Contractor crews will prepare the deck for an epoxy overlay the first weekend, followed by ongoing repairs the second and third. This will preserve the pavement on the bridge and is more cost effective than replacement.
During each closure, travelers will follow a 5-mile signed detour along 94th Avenue Northwest, Sidney Road Southwest, Southeast Pine Road, Bethel-Burley Road South, 66th Avenue Northwest, 154th Street Northwest and the SR 302 Spur. Weekend travelers should add plenty of extra time to help prevent delays.
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 8.3
Description: Drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes during overnight hours as utility crew for Grays Harbor PUD replace aerial power lines across the highway.
Work Schedule: 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 through 5 a.m. Saturday.
