Lane Change Leads to Highway 3 Crash

An unsafe lane change caused a four-vehicle collision on State Route 3 at Sunnyslope Road Friday afternoon that sent a Belfair woman to the hospital.

The Washington State Patrol says the collision occurred about 12:45 PM. A 2017 KIA Niro was southbound on SR-3 in lane one. A 2004 Dodge Ram pickup was southbound in lane two. According to a press memo, the KIA “forced” the Ram into oncoming traffic at intersection with Sunnyslope Road. The pickup struck a northbound 2012 Acura MDX head-on. A 2019 Audi E-Tron behind the Acura wasn’t able to stop in time and struck the other three vehicles.

The 32-year-old Belfair woman driving the KIA was transported by ambulance to Harrison Hospital (now known as St. Micheal’s Medical Center) in Bremerton.

The driver of the Dodge, a 25-year-old Tacoma man, the driver of the Acura, a 40-year-old Preston woman, and the driver of the Audi, a 46-year-old Seattle man, were not injured.

The KIA and Acura were totaled while the Dodge and Audi sustained “reportable” damage. All vehicles were impounded.

The press memo indicates that the cause of the crash was an unsafe lane change by the Belfair woman and she faces charges of Negligent Driving Second Degree.
