Candidate filing week begins 9 AM Monday, May 11, 2020 and runs through 4 PM May 15, 2020. There are a few changes this year due to COVID-19. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC recently spoke with Mason County Auditor Paddy McGuire about filing week and how to file while the Elections office is closed to the public.
“What we’re encouraging people to do is go online,” Auditor McGuire explained during a phone interview. “You can file. You can pay. You can do everything online. All the information is on our website: MasonCountyElections.us.”
If you don’t have internet access, the Elections Department is using the ballot drop box in front of Mason County’s Building 1 in Shelton to receive Declarations of Candidacy or you can mail the declaration in.
Two Mason County Commissioner seats are up for election this fall: Commissioner District 1 (currently held by Randy Neatherlin) and Commissioner District 2 (currently held by Kevin Shutty). All three Mason County Superior Court Judge seats will also be on the ballot as well as Commissioner District 2 seats in Mason County PUD No. 1 (currently held by Ronald Gold) and Mason County PUD No. 3 currently held by Tom Farmer).
According to McGuire, there is a filing fee for those offices equal to one percent of that position’s annual salary or, alternatively, gather signatures equal to that amount. However, gathering signatures is not possible during the pandemic so the Governor has amended his emergency declaration eliminating the need for signatures.
“People can declare themselves unable to pay and not gather signatures,” McGuire clarified. “We’ll just call it good.”
This only applies to candidate filing and not a ballot measure or initiative.
There are also several statewide, congressional and legislative district seats up for election this fall. To file for those, you should go to the Secretary of State’s office or file online.
“The link from our website works for running for any office,” the Auditor said. “If you want to run for Governor; if you want to run for 35th District; the system knows where to send it.”
