NM Hoops Split; NM & SHS Wreslting Results

The North Mason basketball teams split their double header with River Ridge Saturday with the Lady Bulldogs falling in overtime 60 to 58 and the boys from Belfair holding off the Hawks 52 to 49. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC broadcast both games.

In the girls game, North Mason had a 10-point lead in the second quarter only to see River Ridge tie the game at 17 at the 5:20 mark. The Bulldogs responded and took a 28-23 lead into the lockerroom at the half.

The girls from Belfair kept the Hawks at bay until midway through the fourth when River Ridge pulled ahead by three. The Bulldogs then hung around and Sophie Green hit a three at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Free throws were the difference in the extra period. Both teams hit two field goals but the Hawks were 5 for 7 and North Mason was 2 for 4. Overtime came down to another last second three-point attempt in the final seconds. Green was fouled in her attemp at the buzzer but only hit her first free throw.

River Ridge got 17 points each from Cassidy Sroor and Isa Balabagno.

North Mason had four players score in double digits: Alaya Browne had 16; Rachel Youngman 15. Sophie Green 12; and Natalie Carstensen 11.

The Lady Bulldogs’ record dropped to 4-and-5.

In the boys’ game, North Mason started the game on an 8-0 run and built a 13-point lead before River Ridge got on track and closed the gap to four at the half. NM 28, RR 24.

In the third quarter, the Hawks tied the game at 34 before the Bulldogs rallied and had an 8-point lead heading into the fourth.

The final quarter saw River Ridge closed the gap but NM hit their free throws late in the game to secure the win despite only hitting 11 of 24 for the game. The Hawks only went to the free throw line three times hitting 3 of 5 attempts all in the fourth quarter.

The boys from Belfair were led in scoring by Ryan Crookshank’s 15 points and Ethan Collins’ 10.

River Ridge got 16 from Derek Carrol who hit four three-pointers in the loss.

The North Mason boys improved to 3-and-8 on the season, ending a three-game skid.

The Bulldogs return to Olympic League play Tuesday against Bremerton. The girls on the road. The boys at home.

The North Mason boys’ wrestling team placed 7th in the Battle of the Axe at Port Angeles High School.
The Bulldogs lost to Port Angeles 52 to 22 in the 1st round despite pins by Brenden Miller, Izaiah Smith and Nathan Hipple. And an 8 to 0 major decision by Domingo Pedro-Gaspar.
In the 2nd round, the boys from Belfair beat Wilson via a tie breaker with Ethan Miller, Brenden Miller, Jake Mathews and Temple Garcia winning by pins. And a 7 to 2 decision by Gabriel Espinosa.
The 3rd round saw North Mason defeat the All Stars 60 to 6, taking all but one bout with pins by Ethan Fore, Domingo Pedro-Gaspar and Temple Garcia. And decision victories by Erik Bucio and Gabriel Espinosa.
In the consolation bracket, the Bulldogs lost to Oak Harbor 37 to 36. Ethan Fore, Brenden Miller, Temple Garcia and Erick Bucio had pins.
North Mason took 7th place by knocking off Port Townsen 47 to 29 with pins by Ethan Fore, Brenden Miller and Erik Bucio. And wins by technical falls by Izaiah Smith (over team mate Antonio Francisco-Juan) and Domingo Pedro-Gaspar.

The Shelton boys’ wrestling team finished 5th in the Jag Duals at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup.
The Highclimbers beat Bethel 39 to 24 with Beau Ward, Robert Allred, Michael Gilman, and Drew Schirman winning by pins.
Shelton also beat Squalicum 36 to 30 with pins Michale Gilman, Cameron MacAlevy, Braden MacAlevy and Kevin Cruz winning by pins.
The ‘Climbers lost to Cheif Sealth 45 to 34 despite pins by Robert Allred and Michael Gilman, and a 17 to 9 major decision by Beau Ward.
Shelton fell to Emeral Ridge 48 to 34 despite pins by Michael Gilman, Joshua Stanton, Cameron MacAlevy, and Beau Ward.
