Wins for SHS Hoops; Two SHS Wrestlers in HammerHead Semis; NM Hoops Fall
The Shelton girls’ basketball team picked up its first South Sound Conference win of the season Friday beating Timberline 51 to 49 on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The Lady Highclimbers started the game with an 8-0 run, holding the Lady Blazers scoreless until the 3:41 mark of the first quarter. Shelton led by as many as 12 in the first.
That lead increased to 17 in the second quarter behind the scoring of Taya Gouley who hit four three-pointers and had 18 points by halftime. Shelton’s lead at the break was 32 to 18.
The third quarter saw Timberline fight their way back into to the game. The Blazers held the ‘Climbers to 7 points in the quarter and they closed the gap to six.
Timberline continued for force turnovers in the fourth quarter and took a two-point lead with 2:22 remaining in the game. Shelton then took the lead back going up 4 but the Blazers’ Jordan Carter would tie the game at 49 with 14 seconds remaining.
The Highclimbers called a time out and went three-quarters of the court in six seconds. On the in-bound pass, Gouley found Jayde Smith in the front court. Smith drew a double team driving to the basket and hooked a pass across the key to Joni Allen who hit the game-winning uncontested layup.
Shelton was led in scoring by Taya Gouley’s 18 points but she was held scoreless in the second half. Jayde Smith finished with 14.
Timberline’s leading scorer was Jordan Carter who hit four three-pointers and was 5 for 6 at the free throw line for 17 points. Brandi Gardner added 14 points.
Shelton improved to 2-and-5 on the season, 1-and-3 in the SSC. Timberline drops to 1-and-5 overall, 1-and-3 in the conference.
The Highclimbers host Forks today (Saturday) before taking a break for the holidays. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game with the Spartans live. Tip off is 1 PM.
The Shelton boys’ basketball team rebounded from their loss Monday and won at Timberline Friday 56 to 52. The Highclimbers improved to 4-and-2 on the season, 3-and-1 in the South Sound Conference. The ‘Climber boys are off until next Friday when the open play in the 2nd Annual Fort Vancouver High School Holiday Tournament. Shelton plays Woodinville in the Tourney’s first round on December 27th. The Highclimbers will play three games in Vancouver where they took 7th place last year.
After the first day of the HammerHead Invitational at Kitsap Pavilion, Shelton has two wrestlers who have advanced to the semifinals in their weight class. The Highclimbers’ Cameron MacAlevy is taking on North Kitsap’s Robert Gomez at 132 pounds. While Michael Gilman faces Logan Stafford from South Kitsap at 182 pounds.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team was no match for Port Angeles Friday as the Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Roughriders 61 to 26. The girls from Belfair drop to 3-and-3 on the season, 2-and-2 in the Olympic League. NM is off until Saturday, January 4th when they host River Ridge in the first game of a double header on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The North Mason boys’ basketball team hosted Port Angeles Friday. The Bulldogs fell to the Roughriders 71 to 39. The boys from Belfair drop to 2-and-6 on the season, 1-and-3 in the Olympic League. NM is off until next Friday when the play Forks in the North Mason Holiday Invite. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast all four games over the two-day invite live.
