SHS Sweeps NM

The Shelton basketball teams beat North Mason Friday. The Lady Highclimbers came from behind for a 63 to 52 victory while the boys knocked off the Bulldogs 66 to 42. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC broadcast both games.

It was a game of two halves for the girls.

North Mason opened the game on a 12-0 run and held Shelton to four points in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs increased that lead to 17 in the second and had a 28 to 13 lead at the half.

The Lady Highclimbers’ Taya Gouley came out firing three-pointers in the third quarter and Shelton picked up their defensive pressure. Taking advantage of North Mason turnovers, the ‘Climbers pulled to within a point as Gouley hit four threes in the quarter and scored 16 of her game-high 24 points in the frame.

Shelton continued the pressure in the fourth to pick up their first victory.

Leading scorers for Shelton: (as mentioned) Taya Gouley finished with 24 points – hitting five three-pointers; Jayde Smith had 17 points; and Mei Ping Vernon added 8.

North Mason was led by Sophie Green’s 21 points; Natalie Carstensen added 12; and Rachel Youngman finished with 8.

The Shelton girls’ take their 1-and-1 record to Mercer Island Saturday (Dec. 7th) and open South Sound Conference play on Wednesday at home against Peninsula. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast Wednesday’s game.

North Mason is 1-and-2 on the season. The Bulldogs open league play Wednesday against Olympic.

In the boys’ game, Shelton held North Mason scoreless for the first six minutes of the game and didn’t let up building a 16-point first half lead. The Highclimbers held the Bulldogs to five points in the first quarter and six in the third, increasing their lead to 25 points in the second half. Shelton also took advantage of 23 North Mason turnovers.

The Bulldogs tried to get back in the game from beyond the three-point arch but hit only 3 of 24 attempts (12.5%) and shot 30% from the field. The boys from Belfair went to the free throw line 25 times but only made 11 shots as a team (44%).

Shelton’s Ty Thompson finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. Zach Jonker add 11 points. And Chuckie Thompson scored 9.

North Mason got 10 points from Miller Campbell, 9 from Ryan Crookshank and 8 from Spencer Davis off the bench.

Shelton picked up its first win of the season (now 1-and-1) and opens South Sound Conference play Wednesday at Peninsula.

North Mason drops to 0-and-3 and heads to Olympic Wednesday.
