Shelton 24, North Thurston 20
Shelton never trailed while taking the South Sound Conference finale over North Thurston 24 to 20. The Highclimbers struck first, taking their first possession 33 yards on five plays with Zack Jonker diving for a Danny Mendiola-Lopez pass from two yards out for the TD.

The Rams answered on their next possession, tying the game on a five-yard TD run by Jase Marcott.

Shelton took the lead back early in the 2nd quarter when Gavin Gould scored his first touchdown of the night on an 11-yard run after a Highclimber penalty on the goal line negated Gould’s 39-yard TD run the play before.

Up 14 to 7, the ‘Climbers took advantage of the game’s first turnover, going 15 yards in two plays with Gould getting his second TD and Shelton increased its lead to 21 to 7.

North Thurston pulled within a touchdown late in the first half after a missed Highclimber field goal. The Rams went 80 yards and Zach Porter ran it in from a yard out. The half ended with Shelton up 21 to 14.

After forcing the Highclimbers into a three-and-out to start the 3rd quarter, North Thurston’s Marcot scored his second TD on a 54-yards run.

However, the kick on the point after was off and Shelton maintain a one-point lead.

The Highclimbers then took advantage of a bad punt by the Rams late in the 3rd which led to a 27-yard field goal by Hunter Bourgault to start the 4th.

That ended the scoring but the drama continued for rest of the game with each team unable to capitalize on the other team’s mistakes. These miscues included a interception by the Rams, a fumble recovery by the ‘Climbers, a missed Shelton field goal and several untimely penalties that kept drives alive.

The Highclimbers were led by Gavin Gould who had 29 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Danny Mendiola-Lopez completed 7 of 18 passes for 79 yards, a touchdown and an interception. And Zack Jonker caught 5 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown.

North Thurston’s offense was all on the ground with 204 yards. The Rams were unable to complete a pass in ten attempts.
