Friday night, the Shelton, North Mason and Mary M. Knight football teams came up short. The Highclimbers lost to Central Kitsap 13 to 7. The Bulldogs fell to Bremerton 52 to 19. And the Owls dropped a 48 to 34 decision at South Bend.
Central Kitsap 13, Shelton 7
[VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS] Shelton tried some different formations and relied mostly on the short passing game keeping the game close with the help of Central Kitsap mistakes. The Cougars were flagged for 120 yards. Each team committed three turnovers. Donovan Wood-Ricker scored the Highclimbers’ touchdown intercepting a pass on the first offensive play of the third quarter and returning it 28-yards for the score.
Wood-Ricker also recovered a fumble that ended a CK drive at the five-yard line.
Shelton’s Danny Mendiola-Lopez completed 15 of 33 passes for 210 yards. Zack Jonker caught six of those passes. Mendiola-Lopez also had big strikes down the middle of the field to Christian Lopez including this 51-yard pickup on a 4th & 10 late in the game.
Central Kitsap was led by Matthew Willis who ran for 145 yards including a 9-yard touch down run.
The Highclimbers drop to 0-and-5 on the season while the Cougars improved to 3-and-1 (2-and-1 in the South Sound Conference). Shelton heads to South Sound Stadium next Friday to take on the 1-and-4 Timberline Blazers. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live. CK hosts Peninsula.
Bremerton 52, North Mason 19
Bremerton got off to a fast start, going up 13-0 in the first quarter. North Mason’s defense scored the Bulldogs’ first touchdown about midway through the second quarter. However, the Knights responded, adding two more TDs before the boys from Belfair scored again (on a 50-yard run). Bremerton found the end zone one more time before the end of the half and headed to the locker room up 32 to 12.
In the third quarter, the Knights increased their lead to 52 to 12, triggering a running clock. North Mason added a touchdown before the fourth quarter which ended the scoring for both teams.
The Bulldogs dropped to 2-and-3 on the season, 0-and-3 in the Olympic League. North Mason as a long road trip to La Salle next Friday.
South Bend 48, Mary M. Knight 34
Coming off their first win of the season, Mary M. Knight couldn’t keep up with South Bend. The Indians pulled away from the Owls in the second half, scoring 22 points in the third quarter having a 26-20 lead at the half. South Bend improved to 3-and-2 on the season. The boys from Matlock dropped 1-and-4 on the season. MMK travels to Wishkah next Saturday.
