Openings on Civil Service & Historic Preservation Commissions

Mason County is seeking applications to fill a position on the Mason County Civil Service Commission and two open positions on the Mason County Historic Preservation Commission.

The position on the Mason County Civil Service Commission is for an unexpired six-year term that will end on December 31, 2023.

To qualify for the Civil Service Commission, the individual must be a United States citizen, a resident of Mason County for at least the past two years and an elector in Mason County. This person cannot be employed by Mason County and shall serve without compensation. At the time of appointment, not more than two commissioners shall be affiliated with the same political party. Currently, two commissioners are affiliated with the Democratic political party.

The general purpose of the Civil Service Commission is to establish a merit system of employment for county deputy sheriffs and other employees of the office of county sheriff.

The Mason County Civil Service Commission meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in Mason County Building 1, 411 North 5th Street, Shelton.

The Mason County Historic Preservation Commission has two open positions. The major responsibility of the Historic Preservation Commission is to identify and actively encourage the conservation of Mason County’s historic resources by initiating and maintaining a register of historic places and reviewing proposed changes to register properties. They also work to raise community awareness of Mason County’s history and historic resources and serve as Mason County’s primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation.

Commission members serve three-year terms and meet monthly, during business hours, at the County offices in Shelton. These new terms will run from December 2019 to November 2022. Applicants must be residents of Mason County.
