A brush fire in Union forced about 40 people out of their homes Thursday night. The Level 3 evacuation area included those on E. 2nd Street, E. 3rd Street, E. 4th Street, E. Main Street, E. Fir Street, E. Galliano Drive, E. Carney Drive, W. Great Bend Drive, Alder Street from Garnet Court to the end, and Garnet Court.
The Alderbrook Club House and the New Community Church of Union housed the evacuees overnight with the Red Cross providing assistance as needed. The evacuation order remains in effect until further notice.
The fire, called the Union Bank Fire, started on Highway 106 and burned up the hill. At last report the estimated size of the fire was 3 to 5 acres.
Crews from Mason County Fire Districts 6, 1, 4, 11 & 18, North Mason Regional Fire Authority, Central Mason Fire & EMS, West Mason Fire, and DNR spent the night protecting structures with additional crews from Kitsap and Thurston counties assisting. Firefighters are continuing their containment efforts Friday.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but there are unconfirmed reports it started due to a resident burning.
