A 63-year-old Shelton man died Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 101 at Shelton Matlock Road.
The Washington State Patrol says a 2007 Dodge Dakota pickup was on the ramp from Shelton Matlock Road to southbound 101 just before 7 AM. As the truck attempted to merge onto the highway, the driver lost control and the Dakota crossed into the northbound lane where it was struck by a northbound 1989 Toyota Camry. The truck then went over the guardrail and came to rest on the embankment. The car ended up in the northbound lane.
The highway was blocked or partially blocked for three and a half hours.
The deceased driver was in the Toyota and has been identified as Daniel W. Owens, 63 of Shelton.
The driver of the Dodge, Dawn M. Downer, 47 of Shelton, was injured and transported by aid car to Mason General Hospital in Shelton.
A State Patrol press memo indicates that speed was a contributing factor to the crash.
