The Shelton baseball team ended a five-game skid Thursday taking a high-scoring South Sound Conference game over Yelm 17 to 13.
The scoring began in the 2nd inning when the Tornados got two runs. The Highclimbers responded in their half of the 2nd with five runs. Yelm pulled with in one in the 3rd and exploded with six runs in the top of the 4th. Shelton evened things up in the bottom of the 4th with five runs and took the lead again with four runs in the 5th. In the 6th inning, the Tornados again pulled within a run but the ‘Climbers responded in their half of the inning and shut down Yelm in the 7th.
Ty Smotherman led Shelton batting in three runs and was 1 for 3 at the plate with a double. Brenden Engstrom, Max “Falcon” Johnson, Matthew Osberg and Anthony Smith each had two RBI. Brenden Wagner was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI. And Caeleb Hitsman also had an RBI.
Bob Peterson led Yelm going 3 for 4 at the plate with a home run, a triple and three RBI. Kodee Gifford was also 3 for 4 with four RBI.
The Highclimbers improved to 7-and-11 on the season, 4-and-8 in the SSC. They have two games left in the season, both against North Thurston. Shelton plays on the road today (Friday, April 26th) and finished the season at home Monday against the Rams who are batting Central Kitsap for the final playoff spot.
The Shelton boys’ soccer team played Capital to a 1-1 tie Thursday. The Highclimbers are now 8-4-and-2 on the season, 7-4-and-2 in the South Sound Conference. The ‘Climbers are currently in 4th place in the standings, a half game behind Central Kitsap. Shelton wraps up the regular season Tuesday hosting the Cougars. A Highclimber win over CK combined with a Cougar loss to North Thurston on Thursday would move Shelton into 3rd place. The top five teams make the West Central / Southwest District Tournament and a number three seed would mean a home playoff game for the Highclimbers on May 4th.
The Shelton boys’ golf team lost to Gig Harbor Thursday 142 to 92. The Highclimbers host Bremerton today.
The North Mason track and field teams won 11 events Thursday in an Olympic League meet at Kingston High School.
The Bulldogs took the top three places in the girls’ 400 meters with Kira Schwerzler winning the event followed by Sierra Morin and Morgan Shumaker.
The girls’ from Belfair also finished 1, 2, 3 in the javelin with Carli Durbin winning the event, Addilyn Varick finishing 2nd. and Felicity Fowler 3rd.
The North Mason boys took the top three spots in the shot put, the discus and long jump. Grady Durbin won the shot put and took 2nd in the discus; Posiulai Tupolo won the discus and finished 2nd in the shot put; Miller Campbell took 3rd in the shot put and the discus; and the top finishers in the long jump were Christopher Ramsey, Reese Smelcer and Michael Boustead.

Miller Campbell also won the boys javelin.
Noah Hasselblad won the boys’ 1600 meters and the 3200 meters.
Christopher Ramsey took the boys’ triple jump.
Savannah Knutson won the girls’ 1600.
Ryan Crookshank won the boys’ high jump followed by Nathan Fjeld.
Averie DuPont was 2nd in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles.
Addilyn Varick took 2nd in the girls’ shot put.
Kylan Slayton placed 2nd in the girls’ discus.
Dion Nanez took 2nd in the boys’ 400 meters.
Ryan Crookshank finished 2nd in the boys’ 800 meters.
Charles Huff placed 2nd in the boys’ pole vault.
Seth Cox finished 3rd in the boys’ 200 meters.
Trevor Kemmer was 3rd in the boys’ pole vault.
North Mason is among the teams set to particapate in the 59th Shelton Invite on Saturday.
