League Talks Elections, Census and Redistricting

[VIDEO] The League of Women Voters of Mason County heard about elections, the 2020 census and redistricting Tuesday at Harmony Hill. Guest speakers for the League’s monthly membership meeting were Mason County Auditor Paddy McGuire and the League’s Lobby Team Issue Chair on Census and Redistricting, Alison McCaffree.

During McGuire’s presentation “For the People: Free, Fair and Accessible Elections”, the Auditor discussed the process of counting ballots and some of the challenges facing election officials including signatures on ballots, keeping election results secure and redistricting. McCaffree talked about next year’s census (which will be conducted mostly online) and the issues surrounding making sure everyone is counted including the question about citizenship. She also discussed redistricting, the types of gerrymandering (racial, prison and partisan) and how it ties into the census.

Next month, the League of Women Voters of Mason County is holding a meeting on Mental Health. That meeting will be held in the auditorium at Mason PUD 3 beginning at 6 PM May 21st.
