A commitment to safety paid off for Mason PUD 3 and its customers in the form of regional recognition in the Northwest Public Power Association’s 2018 Safety Contest. This is the second honor for safety received this month by PUD 3. The PUD earlier collected the 2018 American Public Power Association’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices.
In the NWPPA competition, PUD 3 placed first in the category of public utilities whose employees worked between 200,001 and 300,000 total hours in 2018. There was a three-way tie for second place: Homer Electric (AK), Roseville Electric (CA), and Silicon Valley Power (CA). Third place was awarded to Clallam PUD (WA).
“Our employees recognize the value of a safe workplace for our customers and community,” said Chris Miller, PUD 3 operations manager.
“This is a recognition of the efforts of all PUD 3 employees. I’m honored to have accepted it on their behalf,” said Dennis Simon, PUD 3 safety & environmental manager. “A good way to measure success is to compare your performance with other utilities. PUD 3 consistently scores well in safety, reliability, communications, and financial management.” Simon said.
The safety awards were presented last week. Awards were based on a complex formula, ranking utilities who had the lowest injury and illness (incidence) rate, and the lowest number of lost workdays compared to total hours worked.
One of Mason PUD 3’s core values is safety. PUD 3 ensures the safety of its community, customers, contractors, partners, and employees by taking a proactive approach to identifying and preventing safety issues.
Mason PUD 3 includes about 600 square miles of service territory, with nearly 34,000 electricity customers. PUD 3 also operates a wholesale fiber optic telecommunications network, which supports the operation of its electric distribution services.
NWPPA is an international association representing and serving over 150 customer-owned, locally controlled utilities in the Western U-S and Canada.
