The Shelton boys’ basketball team held off Mountain View Thursday 58 to 56 to stay alive in the consolation bracket of the 2019 West Central / Southwest 3A Boys District Basketball Tournament.
The Highclimbers built an eight-point lead in the first quarter and led 19 to 13 after one.
The Thunder responded and tied the game late in the second quarter before Shelton went up two at the half 31 to 29.
The third quarter belonged to Mountain View as the Thunder took advantage of six ‘Climber turnovers in the quarter, held Shelton to seven points and built a ten-point lead behind Makai Anderson who scored all of his team-high 15 points in the quarter. Mountain View led 46 to 38 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Highclimbers fought their way back in the fourth quarter with key defensive stops. Shelton was down four with just over a minute to go in the game. Ty Thompson found Kyler Gall in the left corner and Gall knocked down the three-pointer to close the gap to one. On the next Thunder possession, Gall’s defense forced Devin Vellot to miss a lay up which Gall turned into a Highclimbers’ one-point lead. Mountain View pushed the ball up the floor to Vellot again but this time Zack Jonker blocked the shot. Thompson recovered the ball and was foul. Thompson hit the front end of a one-and-one and Shelton was up two. The Thunder had one more chance with five seconds remain but with the ‘Climbers double teaming Vellot, Mountain View went to Mason Wulf. Wulf had an open look at a three but the shot rimmed off. Thompson corralled the rebound and time ran out.
Ty Thompson finished with a game-high 22 points. Kyler Gall added 13.
Shelton now faces Wilson Friday in another must win situation. The Rams knocked off Gig Harbor Thursday 63 to 31. The game will be played at Foss High School. Tip off is 7:45 PM and MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live.
