The Shelton girls’ basketball team pulled away from Mercer Island in the second half Monday as the Highclimbers beat the Islanders 69 to 52.
Shelton started the game on a seven-oh run but Mercer Island responded with a six-oh run and led by three in the first quarter.
The Islanders pushed that lead to five in the second quarter but the ‘Climbers responded and went up five before heading to the break with a 33-30 lead.
The third quarter belonged to Shelton as Taya Gouley scored 11 of the Highclimbers 23 points in the period building a 13-point lead.
The ‘Climbers kept the pressure on in the fourth and increased their lead to 20 points.
Gouley had a game-high 27 points, hitting seven three-pointers. Jayde Smith and Kylind Powell each added 12 points.
Angelina Barokas led Mercer Island with 17 points. Grace Shaddle chpped in 14.
Shelton improved to 4-and-10 on the season. The Lady-‘Climbers hit the road Wednesday traveling to Yelm.
The Mary M. Knight girls’ basketball team dropped their second game of the season Monday falling at Adna 52 to 36. The Owls are now 10-and-2 on the season. They return to 1B Coastal League play Tuesday at Oakville.
