The Shelton wrestling team had one champion and placed five in the Bearcat Invitational Saturday. The Highclimbers’ Ammon Anderson pinned his opponent in the finals at 195 pounds to take the crown. Trevor Meier placed second. Robert Allred and Michael Gilman were third. And Cameron MacAlevy and Peace Lee finished fifth. As a team, Shelton finished tied for fifth at WF West High School.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team rallied from nine points down in the first half Saturday and held off Forks 41 to 40. The Lady Bulldogs trailed the Lady Spartans until late in the third quarter of the non-league game in Belfair.
The NM girls held Forks to five points in the third and took a 26 to 25 lead into the fourth.
The Bulldogs held a three-point lead in the final period but the Spartans kept it close and retook the lead by two midway through.
However, North Mason freshman Jillian Maiuri came up big down the stretch getting two steals and hitting three three-pointers to help the girls from Belfair hold on for the win. Maiuri finished with 9 points.
Despite only hitting three field goals and going one for four at the free throw line, the Bulldogs’ Kirstin Griffey led her team in scoring with 10 points.
Natalie Young, hampered by foul trouble, added 8 points for North Mason.
As a team, the girls from Belfair shot 19 percent (13 for 69) from the field but were 6 for 20 (30%) from three-point range. North Mason also only hit 9 of their 26 free throw opportunities (34%).
The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-and-5 on the season. They return to Olympic League play Tuesday with a game at North Kitsap.
