Basketball: Wins for SHS; Losses for NM

The Shelton girls’ basketball team picked up their first win of the season Friday knocking off Yelm 63 to 51.

The Lady Highclimbers jumped out to a 21 to 5 first quarter lead. That lead ballooned to 19-points in the second quarter and was 21 in the fourth quarter. The Tornados did close to nine points but the ‘Climbers pulled away despite 23 turnovers. Shelton shot 57.5 percent from the field and hit 5 of 11 three-pointers.

Kylind Powell led the Highclimbers with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jayde Smith hit three three-pointers and finished with 11 points. And Taya Gouley added 10 points.

Kaitlin Jewell led Yelm in the loss with 15 points.

Shelton improved to 1-and-2 on the season, 1-and-1 in the South Sound Conference. The Lady-‘Climbers host Gig Harbor Wednesday. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game.

The Shelton boys’ basketball team improved to 4-and-0 Friday knocking off Yelm 64 to 61. This was a close game through out with the Highclimbers leading by one after the first quarter (13 to 12) and were up three at the half (29 to 26). The Tornados won the third quarter out scoring the ‘Climbers 17 to 15 to make it a one-point game (44 to 43). But Shelton pull it out in the end scoring 20 points in the final eight minutes to Yelm’s 18. The Highclimbers travel to Gig Harbor Wednesday.

The North Mason girls’ basketball team lost to Sequim Friday 56 to 31. The Lady Bulldogs have dropped their last two games after starting the season 5-and-0. The girls from Belfair are now 5-and-2 on the season, 0-and-2 in the Olympic League. North Mason travels to Kingston Tuesday.

The North Mason boys’ basketball team lost at Sequim Friday 74 to 60. The Bulldogs are now 3-and-4 on the season, 0-and-2 in the Olympic League. The boys from Belfair host Kingston Tuesday.
