[VIDEO] Mason County’s Health Officer, Dr. Diana Yu, has decided to retire next year. Dr. Yu sent a letter to the Mason County Board of Health earlier this month and made the announcement during Tuesday’s Board of Health meeting.
Dr. Yu has served as Mason County’s Health Officer since 2005. At that time, she was also Health Officer for Lewis and Thurston counties. In 2007, Dr. Yu gave up her Lewis County duties to focus on Mason and Thurston counties. Five years ago, she retired from full time work but remained Mason County’s Health Officer.
In her November 14, 2018 letter, Dr. Yu says she has “mixed feelings” about deciding to “fully retire” by the end of May 2019. The letter also explains her “special affinity and affection for Mason County” and calls the county “the little county that can!!!”
Dr. Yu wrote “It has been an honor and pleasure to work with the excellent staff of Mason County public Health…” and ends her letter with “I remain eternally grateful.”
County officials have already started the search for a new Health Officer but Dr. Yu stated in her letter she would be open to “negotiate a different end date” depending on finding a suitable replacement.
