The North Mason football team needed an extra possession to improve to 2-and-0 on the season Thursday beating Klahowya 20 to 14 in overtime.
The Bulldogs were led by Reese Smelcer who carried the ball 12 times for 130 yards, scored two touchdowns and had two interceptions.
The boys from Belfair started fast, taking advantage of a bad snap on a punk that gave them a short field for their first possession. After a penalty on their first offensive play of the game, Smelcer put North Mason on the board with an eight-yard TD run.
The Eagles’ first score came on a 27-yard field goal late in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs increased their lead early in the second quarter when Shawn Ward ran into the end zone on a quarterback sneak making it 14 to 3.
The second half was not good for the boys from Belfair who struggled to finish drives and only could get to the 20-yard line before penalties and sloppy play would stall drives.
Klahowya took advantage of North Mason’s lack of offense, adding another field goal, touchdown and a two-point conversion that forced the game into overtime.
The Eagles got first crack during overtime but Smelcer ended that OT drive by picking off a third down pass.
The Bulldogs then went 25-yards on three plays with Smelcer getting his second touchdown from nine yards out that ended the game.
North Mason improves to 2-and-0 on the season. They hold their home opener next Friday against Olympic.
