State Highway Road Construction 8/12 to 8/18

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from August 5, 2018 to August 18, 2018.


US 101/Kennedy Creek Bridges – Special Repair
US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost 356.5
Description: Crews will repair supports that elevate both US 101 bridges over Kennedy Creek.
Work Schedule: Drivers may encounter right shoulder closures in both directions and short-term right lane closures. The project is scheduled from Tuesday, Sept. 4, through early October 2018. 

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: The eastbound lanes have been reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic as crews replace outdated culverts under SR 8 to improve fish passage for Middle and East Fork Wildcat Creek.
Work Schedule: Around the clock traffic shift through spring 2019. Any lane closures will be announced.


Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 343.8
Description: Northbound right shoulder closure for utility work.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 through Friday, Aug. 10.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 325.3
Description: One-way alternating traffic for utility work.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 through Thursday, Aug. 16.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 327.9
Description: One-way alternating traffic with flaggers to replace utility cable near North Canal View Road.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 17.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 283 to 283.3
Description: One-way alternating traffic for guardrail repairs.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 through Thursday, Aug. 16.

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 8 to 9.4
Description: Rolling slowdown for less than 10 minutes for a hazard tree removal just south of McCleary Road. During the operation, drivers will encounter a single eastbound right lane closure. Once the tree is removed, traffic will be reopened and cleared.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14.

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 20
Description: Shoulder closure for vegetation management.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone
  •  running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
