A wildfire is burning in the Olympic National Forest northwest of Eldon.
The Maple Fire was first reported around noon Saturday and officials say it spread to an estimated 70 acres in size. The blaze is burning in steep and rugged forested terrain, close to the Jefferson Ridge Trail and the Elk Lake Trail. Forest roads 2421 and 2401 are currently closed to all traffic.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. A type 3 Incident Management Team has taken command of the fire and firefighters will continue to work on containing and suppressing the fire which at last report was 5% contained. Visitors to the Hood Canal region can expect smoke and fire traffic.
