Citizens Voice Support for YMCA

[VIDEO] Citizens packed the Shelton City Council meeting Tuesday night to show their support for building a YMCA in Shelton.

South Sound YMCA is proposing to lease more than ten acres of City-owned land at the corner of Shelton Springs Road and Wallace Kneeland Boulevard. This parcel is east of Oakland Bay Junior High and Shelton High School. The YMCA is proposing a 60-year lease at $1 per year.

The plan is to build “a traditional YMCA facility no less than 29,500 square feet, including swimming pool, public and City facility use space.” The schedule for construction: groundbreaking in July 2020 with substantial completion by July 2022.

The City is reviewing the draft lease and is in the process of surplussing the property in question. Deidre Peterson is Deputy Mayor:

Action on both the YMCA lease and the property surplus is expected at the City Council’s next meeting on July 10th.
