Mary M. Knight’s Kaylee Sowle was selected as WIAA Athlete of the Week for week 38 (May 20 to May 26).
The Owl junior took first place in all four of her events at the Class 1B State Track and Field Championships. These events were the 100-meter dash, the long jump, the triple jump, and the high jump. Sowle set a new 1B record of 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump breaking her own record set last year.
Each week throughout the school year, the WIAA recognizes varsity athletes who exhibited an outstanding performance for the previous week (based off of nominations). All varsity level students in good academic standing at their schools are eligible to receive the WIAA Athlete of the Week Award. Students may win the WIAA Athlete of the Week Award once during any given academic year.
Nominations are open to athletic administrators, coaches, fans and members of the media, with a weekly deadline of Tuesday at noon.
Sowle is the third athlete from Mason County to earn Athlete of the Week this school year and the second from Matlock. North Mason’s Lily Campbell was selected during week 35 (April 29th through May 5th) and Mary M. Knight’s Austin Fries was selected during the third week of the football season.
