The Shelton baseball team finished third in the West Central District 3 / Southwest District 4 Tournament. The Highclimbers played two games Saturday. First Shelton fell to Gig Harbor in the District semifinal 7 to 1. The Highclimbers then rallied for an 8 to 5 win over Central Kitsap. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC broadcast both games.
In the game against the Tides, the ‘Climbers were held to one hit, a lead off single by Caeleb Hitsman and only had six base runners. Shelton’s run was on four walks in the seventh inning. GH’s Austin Dempewolf got the win, pitching 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking three.
In the game against CK, the Cougars struck first with a run in the first inning. The Higlclimbers responded with two runs in their half of the first. Central Kitsap scored four runs in the third inning and led 5 to 2 until the sixth inning when Shelton rallied for six runs.
Brenden Engstrom led off the inning with a walk. Max Osberg doubled. Austin Ramsfield followed with an RBI double that scored Zack Jonker who was running for Engstrom. Trey Dehning then singled to score Blaine Van Aagten (running for Osberg). Maurice Castro then hit a sacrifice grounder that scored Ramsfield to tied the game. Wade Smotherman followed with a 12-pitch at-bat and was walked. Caeleb Hitsman tripled scoring Reese Meyers (running for Dehning) and Wade Smotherman. Ty Smotherman followed with a single that scored Hitsman.
Engstrom picked up the win in relief of Max Johnson, pitching four innings allowing one hit, striking out six and walking two.
Hitsman batted in two runs with his triple.
Max “Falcon” Johnson hit at two-run double.
Matthew Osberg, Austin Ramsfield and Wade Smotherman also hit double.
With the third place finish, the Highclimbers earn a spot in the State Tournament. Shelton plays Southridge at Pasco High School next Saturday at 10 AM in a loser out game.
