The Shelton fast pitch softball team took 5th place in the South Sound Conference Tournament Friday with an 8 to 5 win over Central Kitsap at the RAC (Regional Athletic Complex) in Lacey.
The Highclimbers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Kamryn Hyland and Alex Walters hit back-to-back doubles with two out. Shelton added four runs in the fourth when Walters hit her second double and Molly Delacruz had a two-run single. The ‘Climbers added insurance runs in the the fifth and sixth innings and headed to the top of the seventh with an 8 to 2 lead.
CK managed to get three runs on four hits including an RBI double by Zee Young and an RBI single by Gabby Story with one out before Hyland (who relieved starter Walters in the fourth) retired the last two Cougar batters with help from the Shelton defense.
Walters went 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and scored a run. She pitched four innings, allowed one run on two hits, struck out five and walked five.
Hyland went 2 for 2 at the plate with two doubles, an RBI and scored a run. She pitched three innings, allowed four runs on five hits and struck out two.
Delacruz was 1 for 3, batted in two runs and scored a run.
Trisha Dugger went 2 for 3 and scored a run.
The Lady Highclimbers take the 5th seed from the SSC into the West Central 3 / Southwest District 4 Tournament next Thursday. Shelton will face Stadium, the number two team from the Pierce County League, at 2 PM Thursday. The double elimination tournament will be played at the RAC in Lacey. Shelton’s second game Thursday will be at 6 PM against either Mountainview (the Greater St. Helen’s League No. 2 team) or the SSC’s #4 team (Peninsula or North Thurston).
