SHS Baseball Win SSC Finale, Softball Falls; NM Softball Blasts Kingston, Baseball Falls
The Shelton baseball team wrapped up the regular season knocking off Capital 8 to 3 Monday. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC broadcast the game live.
The Highclimbers got started in the bottom of the first inning when lead off hitter, Caeleb Hitsman, reached first base on a dropped third strike and ended up on third base after a couple of wild throws. Ty Smotherman followed with a ground ball that scored Hitsman. Shelton then moved Smotherman to third base and Trey Dehning batted in Smotherman with two outs.
The Cougars evened the game in the top of the third and the ‘Climbers took the lead back in their half of the inning when Brenden Engstrom batted in Hitsman on a single and Max Johnson hit a double that scored Ty Smotherman.
Shelton added to their lead in the fourth inning. Max “Falcon” Johnson doubled in Wade Smotherman. Hitsman reached first on another dropped third strike and then stole second. Ty Smotherman walked to load the bases. Then after Engstrom flied out, Max Johnson singled scoring Falcon Johnson, Hitsman and Ty Smotherman. The Highclimbers were up 8 to 2.
Capital got a run in the sixth inning.
Shelton then brought in Engstrom in relief of Falcon Johnson. Enstrom retired the Cougar batters he faced, striking out two. Johnson picked up the win, pitching six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out four and walking 2.
Shelton finishes the regular season 13-and-7 overall, 7-and-7 in the South Sound Conference. The Highclimbers finished fourth in the conference and are headed to the West Central District 3 / Southwest District 4 Tournament.
The ‘Climbers will take on the number two team out of the Greater St. Helen’s League at 1 PM Saturday at Heritage Park in Puyallup in their first game of the double elimination tournament.
The Shelton fast pitch softball team lost to Gig Harbor Monday 9 to 4. The Lady Highclimbers drop to 8-and-9 on the season, 4-and-7 in the South Sound Conference. They travel to Yelm, the SSC’s top team, on Wednesday.
The North Mason fast picth softball team blasted past Kingston Monday 18 to 2. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Corlise Newman who went 4 for 5 at the plate, with two triples and six RBI. Rebekah Fredrickson was 3 for 5 with four RBI. Jordin Sullivan was also 3 for 5 batting in two runs and hitting a double. Chloe Lewis went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Taylor Hendrickson batted in two runs. Lewis picked up the win pitching seven innings allowing two runs on five hits with nine strike outs and three walks. The girls from Belfair improved to 4-and-12 on the season, 2-and-7 in the Olympic League. NM hosts Quilcene Friday.
The North Mason baseball team wrapped up the season Monday with a 3 to 1 loss at Kingston. The Bulldogs finish the season 6-and-14 on the season, 4-and-8 in the Olympic League.
