The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from April 29, 2018 to May 5, 2018.

US 101, Olympic Region Guardrail and Cable Barrier 
Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 319.4 to 319.5
Description: One-way alternating traffic for barrier repair.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 1-2. 

US 101, Olympic Region Guardrail and Cable Barrier
 US 101 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 362.1 to 366.7
Description: Left lane and shoulder closures in each direction. The closures will allow crews to modify cable barrier.
Work Schedule: 9 p.m. each weeknight from Monday April 30-Friday, May 4, until 6 a.m. each following day.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 366
Description: Northbound shoulder closure for vegetation management.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 30-May 1.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 365
Description: Southbound I-5 exit to Blake Lake Boulevard will have a shoulder closure for vegetation management.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, May 3.

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 12
Description: Weather permitting, travelers will encounter single lane closures on SR 108 for vegetation management in both directions.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 2.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 274.6 to 281
Description: Travelers will encounter single lane and shoulder closures in both directions of US 101 for sign washing. Equipment will pull off roadway to allow traffic to pass as needed.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, April 30 through Thursday, May 3.


SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: The eastbound lanes have been reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic as crews replace outdated culverts under SR 8 to improve fish passage for Middle and East Fork Wildcat Creek.
Work Schedule: Around the clock traffic shift. Any closures will be announced. Work is scheduled through spring 2019.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone
  •  running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
