Man Rescued from Under Vance Creek Bridge

Personnel from the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT), Mason County Fire Districts 4, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 16, and Central Mason Fire & EMS pulled a man from under the Vance Creek Bridge Tuesday night. Mason County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ryan Spurling told MasonWebTV Powered by HCC the man was injured trying to find the phone he dropped while on the bridge.

The Chief said he was waiting to confirm details but did summarize initial reports from the scene.

“What I was told last night but hasn’t been confirmed was that he was on the Vance Creek Bridge and dropped his phone,” Spurling explained in a phone interview. “He went down off the bridge and tried to scale some of the trails to get his phone. That’s when he slid and fell.”

The name of the man has not been released but he was with a couple other people who reported the incident about 8 PM.

Chief Spurling said the man had “serious, significant injuries.”

Rescuers used ropes to pull the man to safety. He was then transported by Mason County Medic One to a landing zone where Airlift Northwest took him, reportedly, to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Chief Spurling reminded everyone the Vance Creek Bridge is off limits and No Trespassing signs are posted.
