SHS Baseball Wins, Soccer Ties, Rugby Fall & Track Results

The Shelton baseball team beat North Kitsap Saturday 5 to 2 handing the Vikings their first loss of the season. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC broadcast the game live as part of our spring sports broadcast schedule.

The Highclimbers led from the bottom half of the first inning when pitcher Max “Falcon” Johnson hit a two-run single, driving in Caeleb Hitsman and Brenden Engstrom (who doubled in his at-bat just before Falcon).
North Kitsap cut the lead in half in the fourth inning but center fielder Max Johnson hit a two-run single in Shelton’s half of the fourth batting in Trey Dehning and Nathaniel Farr. Johnson scored the ‘Climbers’ fifth run on a NK error to lead 5 to 1.
In the fifth inning, North Kitsap’s Josh Fisher hit a two-out solo home run.
Wade Smotherman relieved Falcon Johnson to start the sixth but was pulled after two batters and Ty Smotherman closed out the game retiring the six batters he faced earning the save.
Falcon Johnson was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings.
Shelton improved to 5-and-1 on the season. They return to South Sound Conference play Tuesday with a game at Gig Harbor.

The Shelton boys’ soccer team played Tumwater to a 1-1 tie Saturday. The Highclimbers are 1-5-and-1 on the season. They host Yelm Tuesday.

The Shelton rugby team lost to Tacoma Saturday. Final score was not reported but Coach Rob Atkinson posted the following to the team’s Facebook page: “This right here is what it is all about people…….sportsmanship! 60 minutes of hard play between mutual combatants, and then 2 teams of awesome young women coming together for this. Totally proud of @sheltonrugby girls for playing as a team today. No W for us, but I’ll take a team playing clean & together any day”

The Shelton track and field teams participated in the Viking Relay Championships at Curtis High School Saturday. The Highclimber boys finished 13th and the girls were 17th.

Top Shelton performers:
Cody Hall finished 2nd in the boys’ javelin.
Kamdan Nicklaus was 2nd in the girls’ high jump with a personal record of 5 feet.
William Johnson placed 3rd in the boys’ 1 mile.
McKenzie Salazar-Fox finished 4th in the girls’ shot put.
The relay team of Raymundo Mendoza, Noah Manu, Zayn Mills and Domoniq Monette was 4th in the 4×55 Shuttle Hurdles.
The Shelton teams have a South Sound Conference meet against North Thurston Thursday at South Sound Stadium in Lacey.

On Friday in the Bedlington Twilight meet at Lynden High School, the North Mason girls’ track and field team placed 10th while the boys from Belfair were 15th.

Top Bulldog placers:
The relay team of Austin Williams, Braeden Kemmer, Anthoney Arreola, and Reese Smelcer won the boys’ 4 x 100 relay.
The relay team of Natalie Carstensen, Olivia Kauahi, Michelle Swearingen, and Morgan Shumaker finished 2nd in the girls’ 2 x 200 relay.
Lily Campbell took 2nd in the girls’ discus with a personal record throw of 122 feet, 10 inches and was 2nd in the girls’ javelin.
