The Shelton boys’ basketball team held off Lakes 76 to 74 Saturday to remain alive in the 2018 Class 3A West Central / Southwest District Basketball Tournament. The game was broadcast live by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The Highclimbers opened the game on a five-zero run and led by six after the first quarter. That lead expanded to 12 in the second but the Lancers cut it to six at the half. The third quarter saw Shelton increase its lead to 14 and led by nine heading into the fourth. In the final quarter, Lakes made their run behind junior Deshawn Wayne who scored 17 of his game-high 37 points in the quarter. (Wayne hit nine three-pointers in the game.) The Lancers repeatedly pulled to within four and every time the ‘Climbers would respond, breaking Lakes’ trapping full court press which would led to easy baskets or made free throws. Shelton make 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter which kept the Lancers from completing the comeback.
Ty Thompson led the ‘Climbers in scoring with 22 points most by driving to the hoop. Thompson also hit 4 of 6 free throws in the fourth quarter. Casey Badillo-Brown benefitted from Shelton’s ability to break Lakes’ press and finished with 17 points. Tyler Auld hit three three-pointers in the first half and was 3 for 4 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to add 16 points. Travis Colbenson chipped in 13 points. Jason Kenyon, who played the entire game and was assigned to defend Wayne, ended up with 4 points. And Noah Benson hit a basket in the second quarter.
