The Shelton basketball team finished the regular season Thursday by sweeping Yelm.
The Lady Highclimbers held off a late Tornado charge to win 58 to 44 in a game broadcast by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
Shelton started the game on a 9-0 run, holding Yelm to just four points in the opening quarter. The ‘Climbers led by as many as 13 in the second quarter but the Tornados made a run, turning Shelton turnovers into point and closing to within three before a last second three pointer put the Highclimbers up six (27 to 21) at the half.
The second half was similar to the first with the Tornados only scoring eight points in the third quarter and falling behind by 20 in the fourth. Yelm then dialed up the pressure and again capitalized on Shelton turnovers to cut the lead to seven before the ‘Climbers pulled away late.
Shelton was led by senior Katie Johnson who hit five three-pointers to finish with 15 points. Junior Kylind Powell also scored 15 points. And senior Jasmine Griffin added 10. The Highclimbers’ third senior player, Kayla Gairns, was held to just two points in her final game in the Mini Dome.
Yelm got 20 points from Maddie Plevyak and 10 from Kaitlin Jewell.
Shelton finished the regular season with a 14-and-6 overall record and a South Sound Conference mark of 9-and-5, placing fourth in the standing. The Highclimbers are in the West Central / Southwest District Tournament and travel to Kelso on Wednesday. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live.
The Shelton boys’ basketball team came 10 points shy of the century mark in Yelm Thursday as the Highclimbers won 90 to 64. Tyler Auld led the way, hitting eight three-points and finishing with 26 points. Shelton wraps up the regular season with an 8-and-12 overall record, 4-and-10 in the South Sound Conference. The Highclimbers placed sixth in the conference and play at Lincoln Thursday in the West Central / Southwest District Tournament. The game will be broadcast by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team ended the season with a 39 to 35 win at Chimacum Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs finishe with an 8-and-12 overall record, 2-and-10 in the Olympic League.
The North Mason boys’ basketball team ended its season Thursday on a possitive note, knocking off Chimacum 82 to 41. The Bulldogs won their last two games to finish 7-and-13 overall, 3-and-9 in the Olympic League, placing 5th in the final standings.
