The Shelton basketball teams lost to Peninsula Friday. The Lady Highclimbers fell in overtime on the road 62 to 55 while the boys lost a heartbreaker at home 52 to 51.
The Seahawks’ Seth Kasteler hit the winning three-pointer with 5 seconds left in the boys’ game which was broadcast by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
After a small deficit in the first quarter, the Highclimbers build their lead to 12 points in the second quarter. Shelton led 42 to 32 at the half.
In the third quarter, Peninsula started its comeback, holding the ‘Climbers scoreless for the first four minutes. The Seahawks, behind the play of Kasteler, tied the ballgame late in the third but Shelton finished strong and led 42 to 36.
Peninsula continued to their pressure in the fourth and tied the game again with about 2 minutes remaining. The Highclimbers held off the Seahawks until Kasteler hit the what turned out to be the game-winning three, finishing with 32 points to lead all scorers. Sam Miller added 10 points for Peninsula.
Shelton was led in the loss by Ty Thompson who scored 21. Travis Colbenson finished with 8 points. Caeleb Hitsman added 7. And Malik Freeman and Tyler Auld chipped in 6 a piece.
The Highclimbers dropped to 7-and-11 on the season, 3-and-9 in the South Sound Conference. Shelton hosts Timberline Tuesday and wrap up the regular season at Yelm Thursday.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Highclimbers fell behind early and fought their way back, outscoring the Lady Seahawks 23 to 13 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. However, Peninsula put Shelton away in the extra period.
The Seahawks had four players score in double digits as they swept the season series with the ‘Climbers. Piper Bauer led the way with 15 points. Esther Pappuleas had 13. Kirsten Ritchie added 12. And Kara McKinney scored 10. Peninsula is now tied with Timberline for second place in the South Sound Conference.
Shelton was led in the loss by Kayla Gairns’ 21 points and Kylind Powell’s 12. The Lady ‘Climbers drop into fourth place in the SSC with an 8-and-4 conference mark, 13-and-5 overall. They travel to Timberline Tuesday and wrap of the regular season in the Mini Dome on Thursday against Yelm. The game between the Highclimbers and the Tornados will be broadcast by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team lost to North Kitsap 58 to 46. The Lady Bulldogs led by three after the first quarter and were up 11 at the half. In the second half, the Lady Vikings flipped the script. The girls from Poulsbo outscored the girls from Belfair 24 to 8 in the third quarter to take the lead. NK put NM away in the fourth. North Mason drops to 7-and-11 on the season, 2-and-9 in the Olympic League. The Bulldogs wrap up the season with two road games next week: at Kingston Tuesday and at Chimacum Thursday.
The North Mason boys’ basketball team lost at North Kitsap Friday 72 to 28. The Bulldogs are now 5-and-13 on the season, 2-and-9 in the Olympic League. The boys from Belfair host Kingston Tuesday and wrap up the season at home Thursday against Chimacum.
The Mary M. Knight boys’ basketball team flew by Wishkah Valley 63 to 5. The Owls are 13-and-5 on the season, 6-and-2 in the 1B Coastal League. The boys from Matlock are second in the standings with two games left in the regular season. MMK host North River Tuesday and wraps up the regular season at Oakville on Friday.
