State Highway Road Construction 1/7 to 1/13

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from January 7, 2018 to January 13, 2018.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule:  Drivers are temporarily using the right lanes of both westbound and eastbound SR 8.

Eastbound SR 8 is closed and both eastbound and westbound SR 8 traffic is using the westbound lanes, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction. The detour will be in place through spring 2018. Traffic speeds in both directions are reduced to 45 MPH.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary remains closed to all traffic around the clock. Drivers can detour via the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

MAINTENANCE

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 4.9 to 11.8
Description: Utility crews will conduct vegetation management. Drivers can expect to one-way traffic with flaggers.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday through Friday, March 2.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 367
Description: Guardrail repair on southbound US 101. Drivers can expect a left lane closure.
Work Schedule: 10:30 p.m. Sat. Jan. 6 to 5 a.m. Sun. Jan. 7

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 281 to 294
Description: Vegetation management and debris removal on both directions of US 101. Drivers can expect a mobile shoulder closure and alternating traffic controlled by flaggers.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
