The Shelton boys’ basketball team picked up its first South Sound Conference win Wednesday night, beating Gig Harbor 65 to 50 in a game broadcast by MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
The Highclimbers fell behind early in the first quarter but forced turnovers and took a seven-point lead. Shelton continued to take advantage of the Tides mistakes in the second quarter and lead 31 to 19 at half.
Gig Harbor started the third quarter on an 11-0 run to pull within a point but the ‘Climbers again started creating turnovers and took back control of the game.
Malik Freeman led Shelton in scoring with 16 points. Jason Kenyon added 11. Travis Colbenson chipped in 10. Ty Thompson and Caeleb Hitsman each scored 8 points. Tyler Auld and Casey Badillo-Brown added 5 points each. and Zach Jonker hit a basket.
The Highclimbers improved to 2-and-4 on the season, 1-and-2 in the SSC. They travel to Silverdale Friday to take on Central Kitsap.
The Shelton girls’ basketball team lost at Gig Harbor Wednesday 55 to 47. The Lady Highclimbers were held to seven points in the first quarter while allowing the Tides to score 15. Shelton rallied in the second, outscoring Gig Harbor 22 to 18, to trail by four at the half. The teams played even in the third quarter but the ‘Climbers couldn’t catch the Tides in the fourth.
Katie Johson led Shelton in the loss with 16 points. Kayla Gairns added 14 points. And Kylind Powell chipped in 8 points.
The Highclimbers drop to 3-and-2 on the season, 2-and-1 in the South Sound Conference. Shelton host Central Kitsap Friday. MasonWebTV Powered by HCC will broadcast the game live.
The North Mason girls’ basketball team picked up their first Olympic League win of the season by beating Bremerton 54 to 36 Wednesday. The Lady Budllogs are now 4-and-2 on the season 1-and-2 in league play. The girls from Belfair travel to North Kitsap Friday.
