Road Construction on State Highways

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from October 8, 2017 to October 14, 2017.

CONSTRUCTION

SR 3 – SR 304 Interchange Improvements Project – Bremerton
Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap Location: Milepost(s) 36.6
Description: From 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, to 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, westbound SR 304 on-ramp to southbound SR 3 will close for sign installation. A signed detour will be provided.

Drivers are now using the extended the second lane of SR 3. Portions of the shoulder were rebuilt and the highway restriped to create a second southbound lane through the SR 3/SR 304 interchange.

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule:  Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

Highway: SR 3 – Belfair Area – Widening and Safety Improvements

Description: This widening project extended the center turn lane and provided paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3.

MAINTENANCE

Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 26.5
Description: Utility work. Drivers can expect traffic to be stopped briefly while crews run communications lines across the road.
Work Schedule: 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 26 to 26.6
Description: Utility work. Northbound right shoulder closure.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 9-11.

Highway: SR 102 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) .34
Description: Utility work. Eastbound right shoulder closure.
Work Schedule: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 9.6
Description: Utility work. Drivers can expect to encounter alternating one-way traffic with flaggers.
Work Schedule: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 2-6.

Description: Utility work. Drivers can expect one-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.

SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap Location: Milepost(s) 30.5
Description: Utility work. Drivers will encounter southbound shoulder closures.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 3-6.

Highway: SR 3 Region: Olympic County: Kitsap Location: Milepost(s) 32.5 to 33.9
Description: Utility crews will conduct vegetation management. Westbound drivers can expect a single-lane closure.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each weekday through Oct. 25.

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 18 to 20
Description: Tree trimming. Drivers can expect westbound left lane closures.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10.

Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Thurston Location: Milepost(s) 16 to 16.4
Description: Tree trimming. Drivers can expect westbound right lane closures.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Description: Culvert inspections. Drivers can expect shoulder closures.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 9-12.

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) .6 to 1.7
Description: One-way alternating traffic for asphalt preservation. Drivers may encounter up to 5 minute delays.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Oct. 9-12.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
