The Gig Harbor football team pulled away from Shelton in the second half Friday as the Tide beat the Highclimbers 30 to 12 in a game broadcast on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC.
Shelton started fast, scoring on their first drive. Jason Kenyon returned the opening kickoff 70 yards to set up the ‘Climbers’ first touchdown which was scored on a four-yard run by Troy Goodwin.
Gig Harbor responded with a 25-yard field goal by Logan Kinney.
The Tide then took the lead in the second quarter, scoring on a seven-yard run, making the score 10 to 6.
The Highclimbers recovered a fumble on a punt return and took the lead back, when Kenyon took a hand off 13 yards to the end zone. After a failed two-point conversion, Shelton led 12 to 10 with 3:03 to go in the half.
The ‘Climbers didn’t hold the lead long as it took Gig Harbor a minute and a half to go 80 yards finding the end zone on a nine-yard TD pass from Jurrian Hering to Kellen Gregory. Tide up 16 to 12.
Shelton’s Cody Hall returned the ensuing kickoff to the Gig Harbor 40 but the drive came up a yard short as time ran out and the Highclimbers headed to the locker room trailing 16 to 12.
The second half belonged to Gig Harbor as the Tide pulled away, finishing with 374 yards of offense to Shelton’s 187.
GH evened its record at 3-and-3, 2-and-2 in the South Sound Conference while the Highclimbers dropped to 0-and-6.
Shelton heads back on the road next week to take on winless North Thurston at South Sound Stadium in Lacey. Friday’s game will be on MasonWebTV Powered by HCC. Kickoff is 7 PM.
NM Drops Homecoming
The North Mason football team lost its homecoming Friday to Sequim 38 to 19.
The Wolves jumped out to a 15-0 first quarter lead and led 23 to 0 before the Bulldogs got on the board with a three-yard TD run by Austin Knight. The boys from Belfair then pulled to within 10 points on a Dylan Tupolo four-yard TD run.
The teams exchanged interceptions with Sequim getting another touchdown and a halftime lead of 30 to 13.
No scoring in the third quarter.
North Mason added their final TD early in the fourth on a 32-yard pass from Shawn Ward to Dylan Tupolo.
The Wolves added another TD and two-point conversion.
The Bulldogs lost their third game in a row and are now 3-and-3 on the seasion, 1-and-3 in the Olympic League. The boys from Belfair travel to Forks next Friday for a non-league battle.
