The North Mason football team was held scoreless until the fourth quarter and scored three touchdowns in the final three minutes of the game but it wasn’t enough as the Bulldogs lost to Olympic 35 to 21.
North Mason was unable to capitalize on two Trojan first-half turnovers (Mario Nanez and Cohlton Schiemer each had interceptions) and Olympic took a 7-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Trojans added another TD on their opening drive of the third quarter to go up 14 to 0.
But it was the fourth quarter when things started to heat up. Olympic added another touchdown and a two-point conversion to lead 22-0 with 11 minutes to go and the Trojans had a pick-six with about 5 minutes remaining to increase their lead to 28-0.
The Bulldogs then got on the scoreboard, driving 66 yards with Reese Smelcer running it in from 10 yards out with about 3 minutes to go.
Olympic quickly answered.
With the score 35 to 7, North Mason scored twice in the final two minutes: Dylan Tupolo took a Shawn Ward pass 26 yards capping a 67-yard drive and Tyler Thomas took a Ward pass 24 yards to the end zone after the Bulldogs recovered the kickoff deep in Trojan territory. But time ran out.
North Mason drops to 3-and-2 on the season, 1-and-2 in the Olympic League. The Bulldogs return to Phil Pugh Stadium next Friday to host Sequim. It will be homecoming for the boys from Belfair.
