Shelton Police Department added extra patrol officers to each school zone Wednesday in an effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety. Several drivers were contacted, and citations were issued for a variety of offences – most were for speed violations in the school zones.
Officers also went downtown to focus on pedestrian safety along Railroad Avenue. An officer dressed in plain clothes – posing as a pedestrian – repeatedly crossed the street in the designated crosswalks. By the end of the day, only two drivers failed to yield to the officer pedestrian – both were cited for the violation. In the school zones, however, twelve citations were issued in just over one hour.
Keeping kids safe and educating the community on the dangers of speeding is a priority for the Shelton PD. Targeted traffic enforcement patrols will continue throughout the school year.
