Road Construction on State Highways 8/20/17 to 8/26/17

The following is a summary of road construction and maintenance scheduled on state highways around Mason County and adjoining areas from August 20, 2017 to August 26, 2017.


SR 119 (Lake Cushman Road) chip seal 
Highway: SR 119 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 7.2
Description: Crews will resurface portions of SR 119 in areas between milepost .08 to 7.2
Work schedule: This project is complete. No further traffic impacts are expected. WSDOT thanks drivers for their patience as crews worked to help preserve this highway.

SR 8 – Middle and East Forks Wildcat Creek – Remove Fish Barriers
Highway: SR 8 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s) 4.3 to 7.5
Description: Crews will remove barriers to fish by constructing bridges across the Middle and East Forks of Wildcat Creek.

Work schedule: From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, SR 8 traffic in the McCleary area will be stopped several times. Drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

The traffic stops will allow contractor crews to deliver and install four large bridge girders.

Westbound SR 8 is reconfigured to accommodate both directions of traffic. The SR 8 speed limit in the area is reduced to 45 mph. This reconfiguration is illustrated in this YouTube video.

The intersection of SR 8 and SR 108 in McCleary is closed to all traffic around the clock through summer 2019. During the closure, drivers headed to McCleary will be directed to the Mox Chehalis Road interchange.

SR 3 – Belfair Area – Widening and Safety Improvements
 SR 3   Region: Olympic   County: Mason  Location: Milepost(s) 25.3 to 27
Description: This widening project extended the center turn lane and provided paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of SR 3.

Work schedule:  Drivers may encounter occasional night one-way alternating traffic.


Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 338.3
Description: Utility work. Drivers can expect alternating one-way traffic with flaggers.
Work Schedule: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Tuesday, Aug. 21-22.

Highway: SR 300 Region: Olympic County: Mason Location: Milepost(s) 0 to 3.2
Description: Utility crews will conduct vegetation management. One-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. each weekday through Aug. 24.

Highway: SR 108 Region: Olympic County: Grays Harbor Location: Milepost(s)
Description: Vegetation management. Drivers can expect to encounter intermittent lane closures for mobile operation.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday, Aug 22-23.

Highway: US 101 Region: Olympic County: Jefferson Location: Milepost(s) 292 to 294
Description: Asphalt preservation. Drivers can expect to encounter one-way alternating traffic.
Work Schedule: 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 14-24.

Tips for Driving Through Work Zones

  • Pay attention – Driver inattention is the number one cause of work zone accidents.
  • Leave room between you and the car ahead of you – Most work zone accidents involve someone running into the car ahead of them. Drive defensively – be aware of what is happening around you.
  • Merge before you reach the work zone.
  • Don’t use cell phones or adjust your radio while driving through the work zone.
