The North Mason Chamber of Commerce hosted a gathering Thursday morning at Kitsap Bank to celebrate the completion of the widening of Highway 3 through Belfair. Among those in attendance were Congressman Derek Kilmer, State Senator Tim Sheldon, Mason County Commissioner Randy Neatherlin, WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator John Wynands, and North Mason Regional Fire Authority’s Jeromy Hicks who is Chairman of the North Mason Chamber Board.
This project extended the center turn lane through Belfair to just south of Belfair Elementary School and Theler Center. It also provides paved shoulders and sidewalks on both sides of Highway 3. New stormwater treatment facilities were also installed to improve water quality in nearby waterways. The end result is a wider, safer highway with reduced congestion.
Construction began in July of 2015 and cost just under $26.5 Million. A second stage, which will extend the center turn lane, paved shoulders and sidewalks south to the intersection with Highway 106 is planned but not yet funded.
