Taylor Shellfish Settles Racial Harassment Suit

Taylor Shellfish has settled a federal racial harassment lawsuit. The Associated Press reports the Shelton-based company agreed to pay $160,000 to Jeremy Daniels, a black mechanic who worked at the company’s Samish Bay Farm. The settlement also has Taylor adopting new training and policies to prevent harassment.

Last September, the U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission sued Taylor Shellfish alleging Daniels faced demeaning comments and stereotypes about his race from the first week of employment. The lawsuit also claimed that his supervisor retaliated against Daniels by assigning him less desirable jobs, screaming profanities at him and writing him up for insubordination.

The settlement was approved Friday.
